1 to be very much afraid
to be very much afraid (surprised) очень бояться (удивляться)English-Russian combinatory dictionary > to be very much afraid
-
2 afraid
a (тк. предикативно) 1. испуганный: to be afraid of smth, smb — бояться чего-либо, кого-либо; to be afraid for smb — бояться за кого-либо; to be afraid to do smth — испытывать страх перед чем-либо, бояться что-либо сделать; to be afraid of doing smth — бояться, что что-либо произойдет; 2. вежливая форма отказа (извинения) в конструкциях типа I am afraid not (1). Afraid относится к прилагательным, которые употребляются только предикативно, т. е. не могут стоять перед существительным. Русские атрибутивные сочетания типа испуганный ребенок (взгляд) и т. д. соответствуют в английком сочетаниям с прилагательным frightened: a frightened child (look). (2). Afraid может употребляться в конструкции с инфинитивом to be afraid to do smth и с герундием to be afraid of doing smth. Конструкция to be afraid of doing smth обычно обозначает какое-либо нежелательное, неожиданное событие, не зависящее от воли говорящего:I am afraid of falling (crashing, making mistakes, etc.)
и подразумевает нежелание говорящего, чтобы это произошло. (3). Для усиления прилагательного afraid, употребляется наречный оборот very much, наречие степени very с прилагательным afraid не сочетается:He was very much afraid.
(4). Русское испугаться, почувствовать страх передается сочетаниями to be afraid и to be (to get) frightened. Существительное fear — страх в таких ситуациях с глаголом to feel не употребляется. (5). Конструкция I'm afraid 2. часто употребляется для вежливого отказа, сообщения неприятных новостей:I'm afraid I can't help you — Сожалею (боюсь, что), но не могу вам помочь.
(6). Конструкции I'm afraid not и I'm afraid so часто употребляются в кратких ответах, чтобы избежать повторения придаточного с that:Can I take your paper? I'm afraid not — Можно мне взять вашу газету? Сожалею, но нельзя (боюсь, что нет).
He is leaving very soon, isn't he? I'm afraid so — Он ведь скоро уезжает? К сожалению, да.
(7). Подобно прилагательному afraid, ряд прилагательных подчиняются общему для них грамматическому правилу: они употребляются только предикативно и требуют для усиления наречного оборота very much. К ним относятся alike, alive, alone, ashamed:They were very much alike — Они очень похожи.
(8). See very, adv. (9). See adjective (7). (10). See ill, a; asleep (1); alive, a (2). -

Verb
"Gustar" better avoided ► While gustar is one of the main ways of translating like, its use is not always appropriate. Used to refer to people, it may imply sexual attraction. Instead, use expressions like caer bien or parecer/ resultar simpático/ agradable. These expressions work like gustar and need an indirect object:
I like Francis very much Francis me cae muy bien or me parece muy simpático or agradable
She likes me, but that's all (A ella) le caigo bien, pero nada más
Like + verb ► Translate to like doing sth and to like to do sth using gustar + ((infinitive)):
Doctors don't like having to go out to visit patients at night A los médicos no les gusta tener que salir a visitar pacientes por la noche
My brother likes to rest after lunch A mi hermano le gusta descansar después de comer ► Translate to like sb doing sth and to like sb to do sth using gustar + que + ((subjunctive)):
My wife likes me to do the shopping A mi mujer le gusta que haga la compra
I don't like Irene living so far away No me gusta que Irene viva tan lejos
"How do you like...?" ► Use qué + parecer to translate how do/ did you like when asking someone's opinion:
How do you like this coat? ¿Qué te parece este abrigo?
How did you like the concert? ¿Qué te ha parecido el concierto? ► But use cómo + gustar when using how do you like more literally:
How do you like your steak? ¿Cómo le gusta la carne?
Would like ► When translating would like, use querer with requests and offers and gustar to talk about preferences and wishes:
Would you like a glass of water? ¿Quiere un vaso de agua?
What would you like me to do about the tickets? ¿Qué quieres que haga respecto a los billetes?
I'd very much like to go to Spain this summer Me gustaría mucho ir a España este verano Literal translations of I'd like are better avoided when making requests in shops and restaurants. Use expressions like the following:
I'd like steak and chips ¿Me pone un filete con patatas fritas?, (Yo) quiero un filete con patatas fritas For further uses and examples, see main entry* * *

20 adjective
n имя прилагательное (1). Когда существительное определяется несколькими прилагательными, они в большинстве случаев располагаются в следующем порядке: прилагательное оценки (суждения), размера, возраста, формы, цвета, национальности и материала, например:nice round blue ball;
a nice big and beautiful old garden;
long, curly, red hair;
her dirty old fur coat;
an old square wooden house;
an old long Scottish sward.
Прилагательные в сравнительной и превосходной степени стоят перед всеми остальными прилагательными:some of the best English actors;
the highest monthly figures;
the most famous English actor.
(2). Прилагательные, относящиеся к местоименным существительным something, anything, nothing, somebody, anybody, nobody, everybody, someone, anyone, everyone, в отличие от общего правила, стоят не перед, а после этих существительных:something black,
nothing new,
someone familiar,
everything important.
(3). Если прилагательное имеет объяснительные слова, то только это прилагательное стоит перед определяемым существительным, а поясняющие его слова стоят после этого существительного:The best place in the world — Самое лучшее в мире место.
The longest film I have ever seen — Самый длинный фильм, который я когда-либо видел.
В качестве таких поясняющих слов часто выступают инфинитивы:It is an easy question to answer — На этот вопрос нетрудно ответить.
Не was the first/last man to come — Он пришел первым/последним.
Не is the last person to ask for help — Он человек, к которому за помощью следует обращаться в последнюю очередь.
(4). В словосочетаниях с прилагательными меры, такими, как deep, high, long, wide, которые определяют количественные существительные, эти прилагательные стоят после определяемых существительных:five miles long — длиной в пять миль/пять миль в длину;
two meteres deep — глубиной в два метра;
an inch high — высотой в дюйм;
six foot/feet deep — глубиной в шесть футов.
(5). Ряд прилагательных может занимать позицию как до, так и после определяемого существительного:а) прилагательные available, required, suggested, affected:the number of available newspapers или the number of newspapers available,
to have the required money или to have the money required;
б) прилагательные possible, impossible, necessary, vacant, free, open, imaginable, если они определяют существительное, которому предшествуют слова every, any, only, first, last, или другое прилагательное в превосходной степени:the best (only) way possible или the best (only) possible way;
every (any) position vacant или every (any) vacant position;
the shortest way imaginable или the shortest imaginable way.
При наличии двух прилагательных прилагательное в превосходной степени следует ставить перед существительным, а второе — предпочтительнее после него:The best method possible;
в) прилагательные concerned, involved, responsible, proper, present имеют разные значения в зависимости от того, стоят ли они перед или после определяемого существительного:There was a concerned look in his eyes — У него было озабоченное выражение глаз.
All the people concerned — Все, кого это касалось.
(6). Ряд прилагательных употребляются в конструкции с последующим инфинитивом в функции определения:She wouldn't be wrong to say so — Так вполне можно сказать.
К таким прилагательным относятся: able, afraid, difficult, anxious, ashamed, easy, eager, foolish, clever, happy, pleased, right, wrong и др. (7). Есть группа прилагательных, которые употребляются только предикативно, т. е. не могут занимать положения перед существительным. К ним относятся: afraid, alike, alive, ashamed, asleep, glad, fond, ill, near, well. В атрибутивной функции, т. е. перед существительным, вместо них употребляются другие прилагательные в сходном значении.
